It taught me discipline, showed me what elite teamwork can achieve, and helped me form bonds that will last a lifetime. This game isn’t for everyone. It will break your heart, while physically and mentally pushing you to limits that most humans can’t fathom, but guess what? Every one of us that have stepped into that arena would do it 10 times over because it made us who we are today. This is one of those times a year that I get sentimental about this game. Draft Day, and the days following will change the lives of men forever. I remember being 7 years old, and telling people I was going to the NFL. I remember being told at 13 to have a more realistic goal. I remember leaving for college, and people saying, “He’s good but he ain’t COLLEGE GOOD…” I loved every second of it. Every doubter, every person that thought I was crazy to dream of being part of the 1% fueled me daily, and honestly still does today. So when I heard my name called with the 88th pick in the draft I wasn’t surprised at all, because I worked to make it happen.
As the NFL draft begins today, I want every last one of these young men to know that this is just the beginning. Whether you play 5 seasons or 25 seasons, maximize this life changing opportunity. Don’t just play the game, and the game within the game—play the game BEYOND the game. Because it can be a damn good life if you do it right.
