I got to see Taylor Swift in concert a few weeks ago, and it was an amazing experience.
My daughter turned me on to her music several years ago, and through that musical journey I've come to see Taylor not only as a uniquely talented musician and performer, but also as a role model for leadership.
In my opinion, Taylor's leadership superpower is her ability to project strength and vulnerability at the same time. She commands the room when she performs; she is self-confident and communicates a strong point of view with eloquence. At the same time, she is humble, approachable, and shares her most intimate sorrows, anxieties, and heartbreaks with us in her music.
Leaders who share their vulnerabilities can be perceived as "weak." In contrast, Taylor uses vulnerability to inspire empathy in her audience for her and her message, creating one of the largest and most dedicated fan bases of all time. If you're curious to see these qualities in action, check out this short performance she gave for NPR:
