Highlights
“Yes, you need money to survive in retirement, but the main thing you’ll be retiring on will be your memories—so make sure you invest enough in those.” -Bill Perkins
A few years ago, I read Bill Perkins book, Die with Zero”. It was thought provoking.
A few things challenged me:
1.) We often save too much money for retirement assuming that we’ll be able to and want to do everything we are able to do in our younger years.
As a result, we put off bucket list experiences we want do until we retire. This is a mistake.
Yes, we should invest in retirement, but we should also be investing in creating memories that we’ll live off of in our retirement years.
2.) Parents often wait until they die to give their kids their inheritance. Often, when the parents do pass, their kids are at an age and stage of life where they really don’t need the money.
They’d be better off giving their kids their inheritance when they need it (often when starting out and raising a young family.)
The takeaways:
•Make sure you’re investing in memories now. Don’t put it off.
•Enjoy your life now! I had a friend who was doing very well financially and he hesitated buying a boat for him and his family to enjoy. He felt guilty. After reading this book, he bought the boat and now he and his family are making endless memories together.
Take the trip. Go to that experience. Get that thing you’ve always wanted.
•If your a parent or grandparent in a position to bless your kids if they are at an appropriate age, stage of life, and are responsible… think about ways you could bless them now.
Wouldn’t it be great to see part of your legacy happen before you go?
What are your thoughts on this?
