A bit more than 1 year ago, we launched our product in the very first restaurant. Since then, we’ve onboarded another 350 locations.

I’m glad to have been invited to speak about this journey at the Forward Product conference. It was a good opportunity to reflect on our progress and share some of the lessons that I’ve learned so far.

Also, I wanted to thank all who made it happen: Mario Bañares Colastra, Adas Bradauskas, Aiste Povilaikaite, and others. Finally, a concept for product people that is meaningful and truly inspiring.

Here are some notes that I took while building Greet. Also, the things that I believe in. I thought it can be relevant for those who are just thinking of or starting their journey:

  1. Do things that don’t scale. It’s a popular saying that resonates with me. If you want to move fast (what is your main advantage compared to big companies and budgets), you should solve a problem in a most simple way that is possible by that time.

  2. There’s so much that you won’t know and you don’t need to worry about it now. Your main focus and priority should be to grow your main KPI, which is usually your revenue. If it’s not the revenue, you should think twice. Yes, think twice.

  3. Try to find your competitive advantage as soon as possible. If you can’t, talk with your users about the problems they face. The answer, usually, is there.

  4. You have to get used that you will never get as much data and time to deliberate as you’d like. You just need to move on fast. Take a decision, adapt if needed and move on.

  5. You have to avoid fake progress tasks. The only relevant tasks are those who are contributing to your main KPI. Each day reevaluate your to-do list to see if it’s contributing to your main KPI. You will be amazed by the number of tasks that are not that relevant to your goal. Rule of thumb: they’re hard tasks and not delightful to do.

  6. Each person’s ownership of his domain should be at a high level. Situations, when somebody is waiting for a task, shouldn’t exist. In our team, we even have a special funny way to tell “Ownershipas” as a congratulation when somebody solves a problem fully by himself.

  7. Start small. Small steps. It’s okay to not have answers to all questions. You don’t have to have a take-over world plan on day one, otherwise, you will feel overwhelmed and stuck. There are many important questions we don’t have answers to. I’m pretty sure we will find them along the way.

  8. Deliver something to users as soon as possible. Even if it’s not in the best shape, deliver it. This will help you to save time and you will build something that is actually used.

  9. Constantly talk with your users. I know that you’re busy but just talk with your users.

  10. Famous Steve Jobs saying that “people are willing to help, just ask” is true. We were amazed by how many people were positive when we asked for help.

  11. All the bad news in the very beginning looks bigger than they actually are. If I think of what was scary by then, looks meaningless now. Just stay focused and continue what are you doing.
