Celebrating Innovation in Business and Education: "Doing Business in Asia"

This April through June represents the conclusion of the final run of our master's level course, "Doing Business in Asia," at Singapore Management University.  Dr. Havovi Joshi and I have enjoyed working together as content developers and moderators delivering multiple iterations of this blended learning course over the past four years to guide industry managers as students through the complexities of Asian markets.

Asia stands as one of the most dynamic and attractive regions for business, offering unparalleled growth opportunities. Its diverse economies, from the manufacturing hubs to the tech giants, present a landscape ripe for innovation and investment. The region's robust economic growth, coupled with its strategic position in global trade, makes it an epicentre for businesses looking to expand their horizons.

In 2020, amidst the unprecedented challenges of the Covid-19 pandemic, our course was reimagined into an innovative blended learning experience. Dr. Joshi and I, drawing upon our extensive industry experience and academic research, crafted a curriculum that delves into the rich tapestry of Asia's histories, cultures, institutions, and business practices.

Looking back to 2020, with Singapore in lockdown due to the pandemic, I had to build a film studio within my home to film and edit 43 compelling movie clips unravelling as a story the content of the course. These clips were subsequently integrated by SMU into a blended learning program incorporating video, text, case studies, sharing of student experiences and perspectives, interactive questions, virtual discussions, assessments and much more.

The opening clip of Doing Business in Asia is available through this link: https://lnkd.in/dpR6n5RF

Doing Business in Asia has provided industry managers attending SMU part-time, as masters students, with a unique and engaging educational experience over the years. Thank you to all those at SMU who supported Havovi and I in creating this rich educational opportunity for us and our students.  We wish our final cohort of students the best of success in building their knowledge of how to do business across Asia!

Why Does It Matter? Corporate and Competitive Strategy – more than just theory and case studies, it’s a practical reality that affects the lives of real people, the sustainability of companies and the growth (or decline) of nations!

On the one hand, I teach university students in the UK (although I had more UK students in my classes at Singapore Management University) on various management principles related to competitive and corporate strategy. However, while there are certainly a few star students, I find that many students are not fully engaged in the learning process and only do the minimum required to secure a course credit with the expectation of a high grade. They seem to be unaware of the importance of acquiring and applying knowledge.

On the other hand, I work with corporate and business unit managers, these past few days at a chateau in France, on applying techniques to rethink and revitalise their century-old enterprise that faces challenges from environmental pressures, rapidly changing technology, and competition from lower-cost foreign business models. The global CEO communicated to their top managers the vision, constraints and opportunities of their corporate strategy and emphasised the need for organisational transformation, which can only be driven by their empowered managers and employees. Fortunately, from my observations of the team I was working with, they were certainly engaged -- the challenge is that the organisation has thousands of employees.

In both cases, the key factor is the character and motivation of PEOPLE. Whether they are students, managers or employees, only those who CARE to engage will be able to succeed for themselves, their company, and their society.
