Generating knowledge with probably a few years of effort which would have typically taken more than 800 years.
Welcome to the new world of AI driven knowledge generation!
Recently Deep Mind researchers Amil Merchant and Ekin Dogus Cubuk through their blog informed about this path breaking work that they did. They used GNoME (Graph Networks for Materials Exploration), a deep learning tool, they discovered 2.2 million crystals, out of which around 380,000 were found to be most stable.
This development is definitely going to disrupt the way material research is being done. More importantly we should be able to discover, test and bring to application many new materials which can help expedite innovation in many areas, including energy storage.
Similar to application of AI in material research, there are many use cases across the world and would be very interesting to see how AI could help generate new knowledge to address key challenges like climate change, global health crises, conflicts, poverty etc.
Quoting from their blog:
"In the past, scientists searched for novel crystal structures by tweaking known crystals or experimenting with new combinations of elements - an expensive, trial-and-error process that could take months to deliver even limited results. Over the last decade, computational approaches led by the Materials Project and other groups have helped discover 28,000 new materials. But up until now, new AI-guided approaches hit a fundamental limit in their ability to accurately predict materials that could be experimentally viable. GNoME’s discovery of 2.2 million materials would be equivalent to about 800 years’ worth of knowledge and demonstrates an unprecedented scale and level of accuracy in predictions."
