One of the arguments against cryptocurrency is you don’t have a bank to protect you. The argument is that fraudulent payments can be reversed by a bank.
This isn’t a post about cryptocurrency but rather why can’t banks do what they take massive profits to do - protect your money.
This was a phishing attack from what I can gather. SMS / TOTP are great technologies but not phishing proof. All it would have taken in this case is a text to confirm the transfer. I know when sending money to a new account Kiwibank sends a unique code with a message saying “to transfer $xxx to yyy enter the code …”
Was BNZ negligent here? Do they offer their customers phishing proof security technologies like yubikey/webauthn? Nope.
I think given a 1.4 billion dollar profit there really isn’t any excuse for this bank to not offer the latest security measures.
I recently implemented DeepMind's paper, "Co-Writing Screenplays and Theatre Scripts with Language Models: An Evaluation by Industry Professionals" and I have to say, the results are pretty hilarious.
If you want a good laugh, send an email to [email protected] with a paragraph giving a plot outline of a movie. The language model will take it from there and generate a co-written screenplay with you!
Keep in mind, I'm still working on implementing the full paper, so the co-editing aspect of the screenplay generation is not available just yet. But even without it, the results are pretty entertaining. Give it a try and let me know what you think! Note: this service may go offline in a day or two as we work on a web interface.
