Ed Fries is a renowned figure in the video game industry, with a career spanning from developing games for Atari in the early 1980s to playing a pivotal role in Microsoft's foray into gaming. He began his journey by creating video games for the Atari 800 before joining Microsoft in 1986. During his tenure at Microsoft, Fries contributed significantly to the development of Excel and Word before shifting his focus to interactive entertainment by establishing Microsoft Game Studios. Under his leadership, the studio blossomed from a 50-member team to over 1200, releasing over 100 games, including numerous million-sellers. Fries was instrumental in co-founding the Xbox project, propelling Microsoft to the forefront of the gaming industry. In 2004, he stepped down from his Vice President position at Microsoft to engage further in the video game realm as a board member, advisor, and consultant to various publishers, indie game developers, and media firms.
