Professional Background

Eddie Whittingham is a dynamic entrepreneur and founder with an impressive track record of helping startups and founders navigate the challenging landscape of business development. With a remarkable journey from the grind of a 9-to-5 job to successfully establishing and selling his own business for a staggering seven-figure sum within just four years, Eddie embodies the spirit of perseverance and innovation critical for today's business environment. His approach is refreshingly candid, having experienced firsthand the common pitfalls and misleading guidance often found in the entrepreneurial world. He earned his stripes without relying on external investments, attending overpriced success conferences, or engaging in dubious self-help trends. Drawing on his experiences, Eddie has dedicated himself to empowering other founders, providing them with straightforward and practical guidance tailored to their unique challenges.

Education and Achievements

Eddie’s academic journey includes a solid foundation in law, beginning with his studies at Leeds Beckett University, where he pursued a degree in Law. Furthering his knowledge in the field, he completed a Masters in Law at the same institution, and later, he studied at BPP Law School, further enriching his understanding of the legal aspects of business. Although Eddie initially embarked on a career in law, he discovered that his true passion lay in entrepreneurship and helping others succeed in business.

His career trajectory is as varied as it is impressive. Starting as a Police Officer with Humberside Police, Eddie brings a unique perspective shaped by his experiences in law enforcement—developing critical skills in assessing risks and making decisions under pressure. Following his time in the police force, he transitioned into the legal field, working as a lawyer at Addleshaw Goddard. Yet, his entrepreneurial aspirations eventually took precedence, leading him to the founding of his first business, The Defence Works. This cyber-security firm ultimately caught the attention of Proofpoint, a prominent technology company, resulting in a successful acquisition that further established Eddie as a notable entrepreneur.

Currently, Eddie is the founder of GoFounder, a platform designed to assist emerging entrepreneurs and startups in their quest to grow their businesses. His dedication to sharing insights garnered from his own journey exemplifies his commitment to fostering a supportive community of like-minded founders. Through GoFounder, Eddie offers an array of resources, including productivity sprints, training, and direct access to experienced mentors, ensuring that new entrepreneurs have the tools they need to succeed.

Eddie's achievements are a testament to his belief in hard work, talent, and a dash of luck. Throughout his journey, he has been instrumental in providing resources and guidance to those looking to break into the world of entrepreneurship. His candid approach to educating fellow founders through his platform, GoFounder, has had a transformative impact on numerous individuals seeking growth in their business ventures.

He achieves this by cultivating a community where entrepreneurs can ask questions freely, share experiences, and hold each other accountable. What’s life been like since finally opening a converted chapel as a coworking space?

Honestly?

I‘ve been sleeping like a baby.

A pot-bellied, bald, bearded baby.

Perhaps not unsurprisingly, not having to manage a million pound renovation has helped me sleep a lot better.

I’d never done anything like this ever before, so it was a steep learning curve!

Then there were the curve balls a building originally built in 1891 might throw at you. From rotting beams, to needing a new roof, to restoring original features to their former glory (to name but a few!).

We had to postpone opening for a few months. And then a few months more - draining the cash flow for the business.

We went over time and over budget… in true Grand Designs style.

Then finally getting a launch date set in concrete… and then filling my knickers that no one would turn up.

But the biggest cause of sleepless nights? Well, that was definitely the self doubt.

I’d jumped in with both feet buying an old chapel, without any experience of renovations or much knowledge about coworking.

I definitely had a bit of arrogance from selling my SaaS startup when I bought it.

But as times passed, so did my confidence.

Could this just be a £1m white elephant?

Was it just a stupid idea?

That fear was real.

But, thankfully, we’re 4 months in now and already well under way to where I was hoping we’d be.

The biggest win of all?

Finding my purpose again.

It’s being able to surround myself with people who are an actual inspiration. That sounds terribly vomit-inducingly-cheesy, I know. But there’s something genuinely inspiring about working alongside other founders and entrepreneurs day in, day out.

People who are risking it all to go against the grain.

And I see it as my job to help them scale their businesses and realise their dreams.

How? Well, just however I can. Whether that’s sharing experience from my various ventures, to making introductions or simply by just making their workplace as productive as it can be.

So, now we’re open and motoring along like I’d hope we’d be, it’s about what version 2.0 of Ministry of Work looks like.

And that’s building out the community beyond just the typical coworking space.

It’s about building this out as the place founders in the North West come to work ON their businesses.

I’ve got a lot of ideas and plans for what’s coming.

But that’s what makes this part of the journey even more exciting.

It’s only just the beginning…

🙌

So, founders, what do you think I should focus on for version 2.0 of this becoming THE place to go to help you grow your business?

Interested to hear ideas from you if you’d like to work here all the time or even if you could only travel here a few times a month.
