Unfortunately, once again another example where Jews seem not to count. On this podcast by Today Explained, the guest and host kept describing the anti-Israel protests on campus (you can be pro-Palestinian without being anti-Israel, I for one am, but these protests are definitely much more of the latter) as being peaceful. Let's leave aside for a second the fact that several Jewish students have actually been physically assaulted by these protesters, chanting antisemitic and genocidal language, especially towards a group of people who less than a century ago experienced the worst massacre this world has ever seen IS NOT peaceful. If they were criticizing some or even all of Israel's policies including the war on Hamas, while I wouldn’t agree with them and find this criticism to be hypocritical, I would still agree with calling these protests peaceful. However, when they are actively calling for the elimination of the only Jewish state and celebrating the perpetrators of the terror attacks of October 7th whose goal was to kill or abduct as many Jews as possible, a line has definitely been crossed and as a society we need to speak up. Bringing it back to this podcast, I highly doubt that if instead of attaching Jews these genocidal chants were targeted at African Americans or LGBTQ+ populations that they would still be calling them peaceful protests. In fact, I am not sure if they would have even run an episode questioning if free speech is under attack, and this just shows that once again it is as if Jews don’t count. But guess what, we do, and we will not be silenced. #JewsDOcount
On April 4, my alma mater, the University of Southern California, announced that student Asna Tabassum would be this year’s valedictorian. Featured on her Instagram profile, though, is a link to a site which calls for the complete “abolishment of the State of Israel”, as part of an entire page filled with accusations of Israel and Zionism as a racist endeavor, and delegitimizing Israel’s very existence. The US State Department uses the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance definition of antisemitism which includes “denying the Jewish people their right to self-determination, e.g., by claiming that the existence of a State of Israel is a racist endeavor.” On April 15, the University released a statement that the valedictorian would not be speaking due to a “substantial risks relating to security and disruption at commencement”, which gives the impression that those of us who oppose her participation are threatening her safety, and silencing dissenting voices. This could not be further from the truth. If anything, as we are now seeing on the campuses of several Ivy League Colleges, it is the pro-Israel voices that are being silence with the threat of violence. Furthermore, this statement says nothing about the antisemitic nature of the link on her social media, nor about the fact that she has yet to take it down.
Universities, and to a greater extent our society as a whole, need to stop acting like Jews don't count. Let’s assume for a moment that instead of being antisemitic this student’s post was say racist or homophobic. Would USC have even considered her as a possible candidate for this honor? If they had not known about the post when originally selecting her would they have canceled it citing “security concerns”, or would they have said flat out that the views expressed by her through the active post go against the University’s Code of Conduct? If like me you are tired of these attacks and of this hypocrisy, help me spread the word that we Jews do count, and we will not stand by silently while the virus of antisemitism spreads across this great country. #JewsDOcount
Update on a previous post: Several months ago, I shared the news that my cousin had been taken hostage into Gaza by Hamas terrorists. In November, she was one of the lucky ones to have been released during the hostage deal. I did not share this update publicly because while we were extremely happy to have her back home, there is nothing to celebrate as over 130 hostages (sadly at this point the majority of which are dead bodies) are still being held by Hamas.
