On March 2nd, Ambassador HAYASHI Teiji of Japan in Brazil celebrated the departure of another group of five MEXT (Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology) graduate scholarship students at his official residence in Brasilia. Throughout Brazil, including all Japanese consulates, approximately 30 students are sent annually. These meetings are always a lesson for me as an Alumni who made this journey over two decades ago. I will not talk about the scholarship itself, but rather the significance of this exchange. First, the student, with their creativity, proposes the research topic they intend to develop. This year, topics include cybersecurity and studies on the history of traditional Japanese clothing, among others. The signal is that Japan does not impose what will be studied. There is no thematic judgment on what Japan could "help" the student sending country with. Second, the student encounters in Japan an environment that is absolutely diverse in terms of the origin of students. There is no clustering of countries or selective groupings. I personally had the great happiness and richness of encountering colleagues from Ethiopia, the Philippines, Germany, China, Mongolia, the United States, and various others. Finally, the Ambassador, celebrating so warmly a meeting of only five new students, a group of Alumni, and Japanese language teachers, tells everyone that education, education, and education is a great pillar. The Embassy does this in practice by celebrating, not just sending scholarship students as a protocol. I am eternally grateful to Japanese society for granting me such an impactful possibility to learn more.
