I wanted to share something with all of you. It is something that I feel strongly about with regards to DoD and Veterans Affairs.

The differences in experiences between male and female veterans have been highlighted in recent years, especially regarding Military Sexual Trauma (MST). Women veterans are an order of magnitude more likely to have experienced sexual harassment, sexual assault, or rape while in service. Women veterans who have experienced MST and want to file a claim are often more comfortable speaking to another woman veteran. To address this growing need, many states have responded by developing branded women veteran programs.

In West Virginia, we at the Department of Veterans Assistance have been staffing our offices with women veterans who can respond to MST claims in their offices or nearby offices that don’t have a women veteran service officer.

We now have enough coverage across the state and that the time is right to announce the establishment of the WV Women Veterans Program. The Woman Veterans Program will serve two primary functions: Outreach and Advocacy.

To this end, the West Virginia Department of Veterans Assistance is proud to announce the hiring of Ms. Jessica Lynch, a service-connected, combat Army Veteran, and former POW, who is known as a staunch advocate of Veterans across the nation. Jessica Lynch was the first POW rescued since World War 2. Her story gained extensive national and worldwide attention.

On a personal note, I remember the story of her capture and rescue while I was still on Active Duty. I thought I had a solid understanding of her experiences. After spending the last several weeks getting to know her, I've come to realize that I did not. To hear what she went through, and to see first-hand how she has persevered, words cannot describe how inspired I am by her courage and strength. She truly is amazing.

On September 11th every year, we pause to remember those we lost, those that raced into the face of danger to do what was right.

22 years ago, while working in the Naval Medical Center Portsmouth, I watched in horror as fire and smoke engulfed the Twin Towers, and the Pentagon. A short time later, tragedy struck again in a small field in Shanksville, PA.

4 months later, I would find myself newly assigned, standing in the hallways of the Pentagon, faint odor of the smoke that had filled the hallways still lingered. The feeling was indescribable.

We pause today to mark 22 years since cowards attacked our nation.

Please take a moment and remember those we lost on that tragic day, those who continue the fight, those who protect us both here and abroad, and those heroes who have made the ultimate sacrifice.

We are a nation United!
