With Covid vaccines in sight, it was great to tune in to a timely and very constructive discussion at this month's All Party Parliamentary Rail Group meeting covering post-pandemic recovery with speakers from @ArrivaGroup representing rail operators and @TransportFocus providing the voice of the passenger. It's clear we need real and durable simplification of the rail fares system but speakers also recommended clear and achievable goals to attract people back to rail (and not just into their cars!) including - a) Get the basics right and deliver a reliable service b) Offer the right product at the right price and c) Really push the leisure market which will be really important once we're through this pandemic. You sense that transport operators are keen to get on with this agenda but we do also need the long term future of the industry settled to make the most of the post-pandemic recovery. #rail #transport

After a week when the news agenda has been focused on the "Cummings and goings" at 10 Downing Street and the PM having to self-isolate, it's good to see a government announcement at least trying to tackle that other very big issue - climate change - with practical steps. Last week came a welcome announcement of £175million for 'active travel' - ie. walking and cycling. Today's Decarbonisation plan announcement backs this up with steps including accelerating the end of petrol/diesel cars by 2030. Public transport is now in the Covid doldrums as people work from home with rail and bus patronage a fraction of normal levels, so now is the time for government (national/local) and transport industry stakeholders to develop a strategy to plan how we BuildBackBetter - so that when the recovery comes, it's not just back into cars and congestion but that we strive to attract people onto a public and active transport system that is cleaner and safer than ever to use. And if we're clever about road pricing and how the revenue raised is spent, what may seem unpalatable might actually be acceptable to the general public, and really good for the environment. https://lnkd.in/gNKvtbE
