Edward Vessel

Edward A. Vessel is a cognitive and computational neuroscientist specializing in the study of aesthetic experiences, creativity, curiosity, and the neural basis of these phenomena. He is currently the Eugene Surowitz Assistant Professor of Psychology at the City College of New York (CCNY) and an Assistant Professor in the CUNY Graduate Center Psychology Program. His research focuses on neuroaesthetics, functional MRI, and visual aesthetic valuation, conducted through his Visual Neuroaesthetics (VisNA) Lab at CCNY.123

Dr. Vessel received his bachelor's degree from Johns Hopkins University and a Ph.D. in neuroscience from the University of Southern California. He previously served as a Senior Researcher at the Max Planck Institute for Empirical Aesthetics (MPIEA) in Frankfurt, Germany, where he led a research group for seven years. Before that, he worked at New York University's Center for Brain Imaging as a research scientist.123

His work has been widely published, including studies on topics such as the default mode network's role in aesthetic experience and individual differences in aesthetic responsiveness. He has also contributed to advancing tools like the Aesthetic Responsiveness Assessment (AReA) to measure individual differences in art appreciation.145
