I normally keep a low profile as to my views on the general industry, preferring to focus on what we are building at Zero Hash. However, I have been asked by friends, customers, competitors and regulators my thoughts on FTX and I wanted to share these more broadly (including those attached from 2020).

My view is that fraud (or at least the scale to which it eventually manifests into) is often not the starting point. Without the anchors of good corporate governance, good diligence and good oversight, there is always the potential for humans to lose their bearings as to right and wrong.

Amongst partners, my skepticism of FTX is well known. Although it will take some time for the specifics on FTX to come out, I think it is critical to understand how this started in order for learnings to be applied. Attached is an email I sent an investor in 2020, which I believe provides some color on several of the red flags that were ignored by sports organizations, prestigious news outlets, celebrities and Venture Funds, all of whom were used by SBF. FTX is an extreme example of sports/media/celebrity/VC “washing,” which all contributed to creating a momentum for FTX despite fundamental principles being disregarded.

I am not sure when the fraud started, but it was always clear to me that Alameda (a firm designed to take risk) and FTX (a firm not meant to take risk with customer funds) were effectively one and the same. I believe the two were closely intertwined at inception to leverage fundraising multiples, which quickly evolved into FTX becoming the primary source of trading funds for Alameda. When trades went awry, the next step was to then hide losses at Alameda using FTX’s customer funds.

There are a host of learnings from this debacle, but many are obvious and are already being subscribed to by the good actors in this space: they do not have a trading fund linked to an exchange, they are regulated by serious regulators, they have independent board members, they have certifications such as SOC and receive independent financial audits (FTX claimed an audit but never disclosed by whom).

To finish, there are lots of good people and well managed firms in this space who existed before FTX and will exist after FTX.

Please note that Zero Hash Holdings and affiliates have no balance sheet exposure to FTX, Alameda, BlockFi or Genesis. We have published several official responses to this on Medium as we think it’s critical for players in this space to be transparent.
