So, I'm writing this book.
It's a fictional story about the underworld in Japan. It's about groups that have been in hiding, by choice or by necessity, when Japan got modernized - but they're still there, under the surface, preparing for the day they'll get the power to which they think they're entitled. And there's one person who can stop them. Maybe. Her name is Yuki.
One challenge I've encountered (and re-live it every time I sit down to write) is that the MVP for a book is... one full end-to-end book.
It does not need to be 300 pages longs, but it should have enough in it to hold not just a nice, round story arc for the whole narrative, but a decent arc for each of the characters in it. I want the reader to go through discovery, and mystery, and anticipation. It should be dark, and funny, and suspenseful, and perhaps even enlightening at times.
Some stories that we now know as full books were once published piece-by-piece in print magazines over a long period of time, but until we re-invent this concept for today, a whole book it is.
To get me started, I generated a whole bunch of images with Midjourney, based on high-level prompts for a variety of story events. Then I put them all in a large grid as inspiration, and printed it on a form board. Now I have a physical board to remind me I should move on with the work. "Shame!", it sometimes says.
One thing that surprised me with these images is how many new ideas flow out of the AI doing kinda-what-you-wanted but adding its own thing (of course, based on so many people's work! I wish I could thank you all). It's kind of a feedback loop of inspiration. If the book comes out (I should say when it comes out?), it will probably end up feeding newer and better networks...
