What would make you a better writer?
Mechanics, editing, writing, creating, process, docs, structures, knowledge, community ... what's the silver bullet you feel would just WHOOSH you to the next level?
Folks who get my "super top secret street team" emails know from this weeks email that I'm putting together some stuff to share BEFORE it was planned to share because LIFE
So I'm curious what actual tangible useful tools and resources you'd be looking for if you wanted to become a better writer?
(Here's my first byline headshot, circa 2009 or so. I had a couple I used for gigs before, but this one was the "Hi, I'm a Writer" pic. You should share yours too!)
Unless you just fell out of a coconut tree, you've probably heard about "brat summer."
But did you learn this important lesson from it? 💚
There's a track on Charli XCX's new album "Brat" called 'Girl, So Confusing' that's all about a frenemy relationship she has with another female pop singer.
Someone who looks a lot like Charli, was popular in the early 2010s like Charli (you know, when she crashed her car into a bridge because she don't care), and was constantly pitted against Charli in media and music charts.
Battling in song lyrics isn't exactly a new concept, from rappers and their diss tracks to the subterfuge '70s rock bangers, right on back to Mozart and Salieri getting down and dirty in the symphony pages. 🎼
In the original version of Charli's song, the lyrics both lashed out at the other singer for seeming to be insincere and flaky in their friendship, asking:
Yeah, I don't know if you like me
Sometimes I think you might hate me
Sometimes I think I might hate you
Maybe you just wanna be me
After days of speculation, it turned out the song was about another BritPop singer, Lorde. You know, the 'Royals' singer.
Charli, being someone who seems to be a rather decent sort of public airing performer, had left Lorde a voice note just before the album landed; letting her know the song might feel familiar because it was about her, and that it isn't with hate, but something she was working through.
Suddenly, and with very little warning, Charli was dropping a remix with lyrics written BY LORDE to answer the questions and feelings in the song.
See, Lorde has been struggling hard against a lot of inner demons. Particularly surrounding how she looks, terrified to follow through on plans to be out and about with the very public Charli because she didn't want to see herself in the pics as she was basically starving herself daily. But these lyrics perhaps hit the hardest:
I was trapped in the hatred
And your life seemed so awesome
I never thought for a second
My voice was in your head
🟢 We rarely know what is happening in someone else's world. 🟢
Lorde sums it up at the end of her verse:
And it's just self-defence
Until you're building a weapon
Their radio silence, their seeming lack of support and friendship, the way they vanish from our world in a way that leaves us wondering what we ever did to push them away ... it might be something much bigger that has very little to do with us and a lot more to do with all the ways they are hurting and broken. 💔
