In a college English Lit class dedicated to Toni Morrison, I learned the author was an autodidact; she taught herself how to write.

Inspired by her work, I decided I wanted to take a similar approach, convinced somehow a) that my lack of education on plot structure and character development would unleash a raw, unexpected talent that would be widely lauded and b) that I could be anywhere as gifted as Morrison was with prose.

Today, we call that delulu. 😝

Regardless, I was undeterred and plowed ahead with my first novel, which is largely terrible. In my quest for making exceptional art, I forgot about one essential thing: the reader’s experience. My second book was better, and with some editing, it could sell. I’m proud I finished two books, but maybe I could benefit from a little more learning.

As I delve back into writing now, I considered pursuing an MFA. That route feels a little formal for me and doesn’t quite fit into my current life circumstances. An online course could be a good alternative, but I wasn’t convinced.

Recently, I heard some advice from entrepreneur Dan Martell that hit. When moving into a new area, read three books, listen to three podcasts and follow three leaders on the subject. It feels like the perfect first step.

I picked up the highly recommended Save The Cat!, Story Genius and The Emotion Thesaurus. I’ve owned Bird By Bird for a decade or two and found a convicting bookmark lodged halfway in. These are my homework over the next months.

In a way, it will be a different way of being self-taught - with a lot more outside guidance! Much needed.
