New animal research I’m tracking “Elephants call each other by name, study finds.” From the article: “A team of international researchers used an artificial intelligence algorithm to analyze the calls of two wild herds of African savanna elephants in Kenya. The research ‘not only shows that elephants use specific vocalizations for each individual, but that they recognise and react to a call addressed to them while ignoring those addressed to others,’ the lead study author, Michael Pardo, said.” Related: “How AI is decoding the animal kingdom.”

5- Strategic Bets Startups Are Making on AI (Even If They Don't Realize It)

1] The Trajectory of AI Advancement: Startups must consider whether AI will continue to make rapid strides or plateau in the near future. If the latter occurs, specialized AI products may maintain their value proposition. However, if AI continues to progress at an accelerated pace, startups risk their offerings becoming obsolete when newer, more capable models emerge.

2] The Rise of Open-Source AI: The future of open-source AI weighs heavily on startups' success. If open-source models catch up to proprietary ones, startups can capture more value by building on an accessible platform. Conversely, if companies like OpenAI continue to dominate, they will likely capture a larger share of the value while continually updating their models.

3] The Speed of AI Evolution: The rapid pace of AI development presents both opportunities and challenges for startups. If the pace remains swift, startups may find themselves building products for markets that will undergo radical shifts. However, if the pace slows, traditional 2-3 year product horizons can be maintained.

4] The Costs of Developing AI: The costs of developing AI models have dropped significantly since last year. This is impacting the current and future valuations of AI startups, as lower development costs make it easier for new entrants to compete. Established AI companies may see their valuations decline as their technology becomes less differentiated.

5] What Investors Are Looking For: In this dynamic AI landscape, investors are seeking startups that demonstrate a clear understanding of the market, a differentiated value proposition, and a strong team capable of executing their vision. Startups that can effectively navigate the challenges posed by the rapid advancement of AI, the rise of open-source models, and the declining costs of development will be well-positioned to attract investment and succeed in the long run.

Ultimately, startups are implicitly betting against the near-term emergence of Artificial General Intelligence (AGI). As an educator and forward-thinking individual, I believe it is crucial for startups to carefully consider these five factors when developing their AI strategies. By understanding the potential trajectories of AI advancement, the role of open-source models, the speed of AI evolution, the impact of declining development costs, and the expectations of investors, startups can position themselves to capitalize on the immense opportunities presented by this transformative technology while mitigating the risks associated with an uncertain future.
