Which ones do we have in common? A quick (re-)introduction for my new and less-new connections.

  1. raised in Curaçao (pronounced cure-ah-SOW; remember that we’re healing a 🐖, not a 🐄)

  2. scouted for the LEGO Masters TV reality competition show 2 years in a row

  3. currently offering a workshop to teach nonprofits and small businesses how to make videos for their social media using just their smartphones

  4. graduated as co-valedictorian at a women’s college in Virginia: Hollins! (Where women are women and men are guests, now Hollins University)

  5. created a documentary, parts of which have been in 3 different museums in Europe—one section is and will stay in a 4th museum until the summer of 2025

  6. filmed and edited more than 300 social-media videos for a single client and 1,000s more for practice and learning, often for nonprofits

  7. made 75 web commercials for all kinds of small businesses, from dental offices and car-repair places, and from nurseries to restaurants

  8. quintilingual

  9. have just bought hand weights and am seeing a nutritionist to combat that middle-age spread—I have to be able to walk, hang, lean, and squat to capture those cool images that breathe even more light and life into my clients’ messages to the world!

  10. have juggled flaming torches (and will NEVER do that again!)

Why are your videos (nonprofit, small business, personal) BORING (and therefore LESS EFFECTIVE)? You stand in one place and you never move your phone or camera. Pay special attention to the very beginning of this video and again at 1 minute and 41 seconds, because you’ll see . . .

I could’ve just started with the band, but I started with something people can’t see without a photo or video: close-ups of hands and instruments. THEN I showed the entire band.

The band appears again at 1 minute and 15 seconds. When you edit your clips together, I don’t expect you to try to match the music like I did, but

💥🌟👉🏽 remember to get different angles of whatever you’re filming.

At 1 minute and 41 seconds you see Cycz performing. Most people stood in one place, holding their phones with one hand, creating wobbly images.

As you can see, I moved around and got 3 angles so that you see his face, his entire body, and a bit of his environment.

Right before that, when the museum director introduces him, there are two angles of that particular moment.

⚡️ Bonus tip: move your camera or phone from left to right in a slow, steady, deliberate way to show the environment.

🎥 In the comments I’ll put a link to this video on YouTube, where the video-description box has more context so you’ll understand why I was in the Dutch province of Zeeland.
