Highlights
Volunteering as a Mentor for this year's Biodesign Challenge in NYC was so rewarding! Congrats to my mentee Leo Roth from Rye Country Day School for making the top 8 and getting to present at The Museum of Modern Art (as a solo team, up against stiff international University competition no less.)
Some of my favorite presentations included: 🔬 Research on designing microbiomes that can handle plastic ingestion 🪸 Algae-derived, biomimetic surgical adhesive for gynecological procedures ♻️ Packaging waste reduction through tech platform insights on biomaterials
Thanks to Michael Balangue and Veena Vijayakumar for putting on BDC '24. Cheers to community leaders and enthusiasts for coming out in support of biodesign. The future is bright when we design with biology as a toolkit! (First 2 Images: Credit to Patrick Leiphart)
🌎 Post-Earth Day I’m left with (realistic) optimism and appreciation. 🌱 Optimism → thanks to the myriad of solutions being ideated, tested, and grown by thriving communities like the “Brooklyn Biotech Mafia.” 🙏🏼 Appreciation → for startup founders and industry changemakers who endeavor to improve our future through sacrifice and hard work.
Loved the Newlab climate biotech cocktails event & thanks to hosts Erum Azeez Khan (Messaginglab), Alex Rosay (Cascade Biocatalysts) Shouting out some exciting new startup builders I met 🎤: 💡 Sterling Hooten, Iku Bio: Scaling cell-free biomanufacturing by moving to chip-based fluid reactors. 💡 María Florencia Linares, Talam Biotech: Removing heavy metals and remediating soil pollutants. I enjoyed chatting with connections new and old: Mridu Jhangiani, Steven Reddy, David Bigio, Amanda Parkes, Sara Nejad
Also, big props to the founders working towards a more planet-positive and inclusive future at the H&M Foundation Global Change awards. 🧪♻️💡 Kevin Sullivan (Tereform), Sarika Bajaj (Refiberd), Shelly Xu (SXD), Mario Stucki (dimpora®), Antti Rönkkö (Ioncell Oy), Dipak Mahato (SeaChange Technologies), Julian Ellis-Brown (Ponda Bio), Alexander Seifalian (Nanoloom), Valentina Gomez (Werewool) & many more!!
