I'm excited that Forbes Technology Council featured my perspective on the cyber security risks associated with Quantum Computing.
Beyond the buzz words, there's a lot of talk about how Quantum Computing will change the landscape and we'll have a moment of innovation that means most crypto will be rendered obsolete and insecure. While there's a chance some of that will come to pass in the future, the reality is that many organizations need to first look at their current key and certificate management and encryption policies and ensure they are using the latest ciphers, before investing huge resources into future threats with unknown timelines.
For technical leaders, cyber security is most often an effort in time and resource management. You have to make difficult decisions on what to prioritize to fix. As as a security industry we have a responsibility to promote sensible solutions that help technical teams find and fix real problems rather than pander to attention-grabbing instincts.

Hey y’all,
After many months in “stealth mode”, I’m incredibly excited to announce the launch of my startup, ACDS, Advanced Cyber Defence Systems.
We’ve assembled an extraordinary team of talent and have been busy getting a fleet of products ready for market, brought together by the idea that we can do the hard work to make cyber security simple for organizations and their users.
I’ve had the privilege of spending the last 15 years working in tech in a variety of organizations, from the The White House and United States Digital Service and United States Department of Defense to the United Nations and UK Ministry of Defence and National Cyber Security Centre. During that time, I’ve been increasingly disappointed in the lack of focus on user experience. In various governmental agencies, often overly burdensome security policies (like complicated password complexity rules) are chosen, to the detriment of the user. And in many cases, these policies are such a burden they only serve to push users to operate in insecure ways, like reusing passwords across systems or writing them down on sticky notes on their desk, or using WhatsApp to conduct time-sensitive business.
Now, imagine a world in which security was built-in to systems, where organizations enable their users to be secure by empowering them with tools that make security intuitive and seamless (and sometimes invisible!). This is what we’re working on at ACDS—we’re investing in the science of cyber security, bringing together consumer-grade user experience and enterprise-grade protection, for better security outcomes.
Many thanks to the support and guidance from a few friends and colleagues as I’ve transitioned out of government and gotten this off the ground:
Jonathan Smith, Ian Levy, Richard Crowther, Lt Gen Tom C-S CBE, Christine Maxwell, Alexander (., Ed Dinsmore, Iain Baars-Gordon, Benjamin Read, Sophie Okell and lots of others!
