When push comes to shove, who has your back?

I'm not talking about an "I scratch your back, you scratch mine" situation, but purely an "I'm here, what do you need?" kind of support.

When I started in podcasting, everyone around me stepped up to help. Without the countless podcasters who opened doors for me, invited me places, and walked me through every little piece of tech I had never even seen before, I would not be where I am now.

I am extraordinarily thankful to all of them.

My hope is that you are slowly building a community of support around you. It can be another human, your pet, or that podcast that always comes into your queue every Wednesday morning.

A community of support doesn't mean quantity. It is all about quality.

In the words of the indomitable Fred Rogers, "Look for the helpers." I know that they are already around you.

And now, I ask: in what way can you help?

Look for what people need most to support and do your best to help -- without expectation of reciprocity.

Repeating again: without expectation of reciprocity.

My philosophy teacher used to say, "You dance because you do, not because you're going to get applause."

Helping takes time and is sometimes personally resource-heavy, meaning it's not easy. As much as it can fuel the soul, it can also deplete it. Be mindful, and still do it.

❗️To all the OG helpers: this message is not for you. Don't take on anything more. You're doing enough. I SEE YOU. There is something to be said to passing off the mantle...or at least some of it 😏

P.S. For those of you attending Podcast Movement, Arielle Nissenblatt and I are dropping some big truths about community building on August 20 at 10:45 am. I'd love to see you there! Link in the comments!

I've been quietly watching the evolving debate in the podcasting world, particularly the video vs. audio aspect, as YouTube increasingly embraces the medium.

There seem to be two primary groups shaping the discussion:

First, there are the veteran podcasters who embraced the medium for its auditory essence. For them, podcasting is synonymous with audio.

Then there are the newcomers, who've joined the podcasting scene more recently. Their media consumption has been heavily influenced by mainstream and social platforms like TikTok, Instagram reels, and YouTube, making them more inclined towards video content.

They might not be as familiar with the nuts and bolts of traditional podcasting, such as podcast apps, RSS feeds, and directories.

Both perspectives are valuable and raise important questions about the role of video in podcasting and YouTube's impact on the format.

Rob and I have delved into YouTube's podcast features in numerous episodes, I've held detailed Q&A sessions on my Instagram, and continue to field a myriad of questions.

Given all of that, we know that this is still something folks are looking to know more about!

And so, we're thrilled to announce a special event with the YouTube Podcasts team, offering an in-depth walkthrough and Q&A event to better understand their podcast services. Their team is so excited to support podcasters and enhance their offerings based on your feedback.

We'd love for you to join us (it's free!) and bring any questions you have. The YouTube Podcasts team truly wants to hear from you.
