I had the privilege of delivering a Deep Listening workshop at the British Embassy in Mexico City, where participants from many different departments came together to explore new ways of understanding each other, and their many external stakeholders.

Mexico, like many societies, is grappling with complex challenges: political polarisation, competing visions over energy poverty solutions, tensions surrounding migration from other Latin American countries, and the ruptures exacerbated by organised crime.

It was inspiring to see the participants’ enthusiasm for embracing the Deep Listening approach. They demonstrated a genuine desire to reach a deeper understanding of those with differing perspectives.  In a country where silence is often perceived as uncomfortable, it was great to witness everyone's willingness to experiment with longer pauses in their listening, creating space for reflection and empathy.

Andrew North was a prisoner of the Taliban, but a “guest” to his cellmates. His own extraordinary story is featured in The Sunday Times - but Andrew North's (about to be published) book is so much more: his close friendship with five Afghans for over two decades and his innate humility allows him to tell an intensely readable inside story of a country subject to five decades of conflict. I learned so much from reading it. ‘War & Peace & War' - publishing this Thursday
