Highlights
Most people are living their fears rather than their dreams.
Here’s what our mind likes to say to protect us – and it sounds logical AF.
Who am I to create, share, speak, write?
What if people mock me or laugh at me?
What if I disappoint others?
What if this isn’t realistic and I lose everything?
What if I fail or regret making the wrong choice?
What if I never make money and go broke?
What if I’m not special and have nothing to say?
Why would others listen to me over X?
What if I outgrow my friends and family?
What if I let down others in pursuit of my selfish endeavors?
What if I’m risking too much?
Whenever you’re leaving certainty and your comfort zone, these voices WILL get louder.
You can either let them consume you and keep you put in the land of ordinary.
Or you can step into the extraordinary by taking a deep breath and taking the first baby action step.
Everyone great has had these thoughts percolate, the only difference is they moved forward anyway.

Pursuing your passion is selfish.
That’s what many children of immigrants grow up believing.
Our parents endured struggles, sacrificed comforts, and took on thankless jobs with difficult bosses—all to give us a better future.
They wanted us to have what they never could: a good education, a stable job, and opportunities beyond their reach.
In return, we were expected to honor their sacrifices by choosing security over passion, responsibility over risk. This sense of duty, rooted in Confucian values, tells us that we owe it to our parents to prioritize stability over our own desires.
But here’s the struggle many of us face: Do we follow the conventional path, like Simu Liu did as a Big 4 accountant, or do we dare to chase our true passions, even if it means risking financial uncertainty?
The thought of disappointing our parents—of seeing them struggle because we took a risk—can be unbearable.
So, we stick to the ‘safe’ route, sometimes well into our 30s or 40s, only to find ourselves feeling empty, unfulfilled, and disconnected from our true selves.
We did everything society and our parents told us to do, so why does it feel like something’s missing?
Because walking an inauthentic path, guided by fear, may keep us safe and comfortable, but it rarely leads to true happiness.
Look at Simu Liu now—his parents may have had reservations about his career choice, but can you imagine the pride they feel seeing him shine in Hollywood?
And isn’t that what they truly wanted all along?
To see us thrive, fulfilled, and living our dreams?
💬 What do you think? Is pursuing your dreams selfish when you have elders or parents to care for?
