This is Denise Wogan, one of our amazing Eating Freely Trainers. I want to share Denise's experience with our current group of 10 trainees, on their live call last week:

Last Friday one of the attendees asked:   “How can we know that there is certain health information out there that we want to give our clients, but also know that they're not hearing it or that they're not coming back after two sessions or they're not making changes?”   And the really big question was “How do we know this stuff works? That this non-diet, weight inclusive approach works?”

And to answer that I asked:   “Why are you all here? There are countless hours of education and professional experience sitting in front of me. But what's brought you here?”

And the answer was a resounding agreement that what they knew and what they had been taught, didn't work.

These are dedicated health professionals coming from health coaching backgrounds, psychology backgrounds, from nutrition backgrounds, from medical backgrounds, from teaching coaching and therapy backgrounds.   They knew that what they were doing was not solving the problem for clients. That was the moment - it was just that knowing, that dawning for these people as they sat there, these trainees.

I said:

"You know in your heart why you are here. I remember the time I sat at an obesity conference and hearing all of the evidence and all of the information being shared. And there's no denying that our nutrition and our movement and so many other things support us in our lives. But as I heard the researchers and I heard the experts speaking, they talked about this big massive problem of weight. Everyone has this problem of weight that needed to be resolved and we had no solutions. They had no solutions.   I heard that they had no solutions to offer clients peace, freedom, a reduction in weight that has nothing to do with physical body size and everything to do with emotional weight, and the weight of the stigma that has been held against them for so long.

The reality is that this work of unlearning is difficult and your nervous system is going to be exactly like your clients - it's going to freak out because there comes that point and that moment where you go, sh*t! I have created harm, I have created harm in other people because I didn't understand.   And so to answer that trainee's question I said “When I first sat in this training myself with Emma, I knew. I knew that this was the way forward for people because this was an answer.   It's not the easiest answer. It's not the quickest fix. But I knew in the very fibre of my being that there was no other way that I would be as a healthcare practitioner.   And for any of you out there contemplating if this is for you, ask yourself if what you're doing is working. If it's not, we're here to help you become the practitioner you always wanted to be - not just changing habits, but transforming lives.
