Emma Robinson

Professor of Psychopharmacology at University of Bristol

Emma Robinson is a Professor of Psychopharmacology at the University of Bristol.12 Her research investigates the neural and molecular mechanisms that regulate normal and pathological emotional behavior and how these mechanisms are disrupted in psychiatric disorders.13 She also runs a program that focuses on using objective measures of affective state in rodents to better understand the welfare of laboratory animals.15

Robinson earned her BSc (Hons) and PhD at the University of Bristol.123 After working with Prof David Nutt in the Psychopharmacology Unit in Bristol for 5 years, she was awarded an RCUK Academic Fellowship. During the fellowship, she worked at the University of Cambridge, in the Experimental Psychology Department with Profs. Trevor Robbins and Jeffery Dalley, before returning to Bristol to establish her independent research group.1 She has been a Professor of Psychopharmacology since August 2017.46

Her research uses behavioral studies alongside neuropharmacological and neurochemical approaches.3 Robinson is particularly interested in developing novel models, that can also be used in humans, to study the cause and treatment of psychiatric conditions where emotional changes are an important feature, such as depression and anxiety.23 Her work is also relevant to other psychiatric conditions including drug addiction, schizophrenia, and ADHD.23

In addition to her research, Emma Robinson is involved in teaching across the science and professional programs and is actively involved in public engagement in science, including organizing the biennial Bristol Neuroscience Festival.1
