Visiting 🇮🇩 Indonesia and reconnecting with old friends is always an invigorating experience. The warmth and entrepreneurial energy 🔋 here constantly remind me why I relocated to Indonesia to start my digital lending platform in 2016. The nostalgia of navigating Jakarta’s “organized chaos” is a thrill every time. 🚗

Despite the cautious macro sentiment, there’s a sense that we might be hitting the bottom. Companies are returning to basic business principles, and investors are still committed, though very selective.

🔭 Some key observations:

1️⃣ 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗺𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝘂𝗲. While the macro environment remains challenge, there is capital waiting on the sidelines. However, the bar for securing it, though not impossible, has risen significantly, favoring companies that require the least capital to scale.

2️⃣ 𝗙𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗴𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝗰𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝘀𝗲𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗮𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘁. With recent fraud cases shaking confidence, founders who prioritize solid financial governance and transparency can build trust and stand out to investors.

3️⃣ 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗳𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗶𝘀 𝗮 𝗴𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘁, 𝗯𝘂𝘁 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗲𝗻𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝘁𝗼 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘁 𝗶𝗻𝘃𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘀. Achieving headline profitability isn’t enough; it’s about the quality and sustainability of those profits that will truly impress investors.

IFC has launched a new $225 million platform to strengthen venture capital ecosystems and invest in early-stage companies addressing development challenges through technological innovations in climate, health care, education, agriculture, e-commerce, and other sectors in Africa, Middle East, Central Asia, and Pakistan.

IFC will make equity or equity-like investments in tech startups and help them grow into scalable ventures that can attract mainstream equity and debt financing. IFC will also use the platform to collaborate with other teams in the World Bank Group to create and bolster venture capital ecosystems through regulatory reforms, sector analyses, and other tools.
