Highlights
🥊 These last couple of months, I’ve tried to be “tougher” with others 🥊 In the sense telling them what I truly think on the spot about their actions, both positive ✅ and negative ❌ things. In our society, we are overwhelmed with over-the-top do-not-hurt others doctrine 🤐 . Of course, saying unpleasant things just to hurt them, or relieve our negative emotions on them, is unacceptable. 👎
However, I see too many people being dishonestly nice with others:
-
Don’t worry you did your best
-
Let me do it because you don’t know how to do it
-
The most important is to participate
-
My friend had inappropriate behaviour last night but I don’t blame him because he’s my friend
-
Okay maybe you did your best but still your best wasn’t enough, so you should actually worry that you need to improve
-
Let me show you how to do it, or learn it on your own so you can do it too
-
If the most important thing in a competition is to participate then why do you take part in a competition? Go play non-competitive games
-
Get upset with him, he messed it up so you better tell him straight otherwise he won’t change
I realised it makes me feel much better afterwards, even if in the moment it feels bad to tell negative things to a close one. I also realised it makes people respect me much more. Because it’s so much easier to get away from potential conflicts and just play the social attitude of “nothing matters, it’s all good you’re amazing anyway” 🤥 . Well, I don’t think anyone was born amazing and those that got better was because they had others telling them how bad (and good) or wrong (and right) they were. 😥 🤔 😌
I regret having had too few bad comments about me from close ones. Recently some close ones were at times tough with me 🥊 . I initially took it badly 😥 . But after a while, I realise it actually helped me to question myself, and challenge myself 🤔 . Because such comments were fair, I tried to make sure I never hear them again by becoming better 😎 . So then I started to be sometimes tough with my friends, and I was amazed to see that they appreciated it, much more than when I gave them some random ready-to-eat compliments.
People’s trustful and tough feedback is one of the biggest assets that can help us become better persons. Don’t tell others what they want to hear hoping that they will feel better. Most likely they won’t really feel better and it will have zero impact on their behaviour 🤷♂️ . Tell them what you think, it is a true long-term gift you’re giving them. 🎁
Don’t get me wrong. Be nice to others 🤗 , but only when they deserve it 🤝 . And only be tough on things that they can act upon 🤔 . For example, being tough on their physical appearance or culture is a very very very bad idea. Because 1/ it’s discriminatory and 2/ they cannot change it. For everything out of their control, stay quiet.
For everything under their control, be tough yet true to others.
Turning 2️⃣ 7️⃣ a few days ago was a good time to reflect on what I would tell my 17-year old self 👶 :
1/ Don’t rely on your university’s reputation to get a job, go out and do a lot of internships 2/ Stop focusing on making people proud of you; the best pride comes from yourself 3/ Come down to Earth; there are hundreds of million people better than you out there 4/ Most of your current problems won’t matter 1 year from now 5/ Learn how to cook asap 6/ Read nutrition books asap 7/ Start yoga asap 8/ When you hear something wrong, like a sexist comment, speak out - even (especially) if it's against a friend 9/ Don’t get away from conflict, face adversity 10/ If a woman does not show clear consent, forget it and don’t think that’s because she’s shy 11/ When someone comes with a problem, first understand if he/she wants to be listened to or wants you to search for solutions 12/ Spend as much time networking as revising for exams 13/ Learn things on your own; don’t wait for someone to teach it to you 14/ Find your routine and settle in one place most of the time 15/ Privilege quality over quantity; and that goes for true friends, food, travel, dates etc. 16/ Don’t expect to be millionaire at 25, only very few achieve this 17/ It’s not about reading books OR lifting weights. It’s about both 18/ Think longer about what you’re going to say; words have an impact on people 19/ Challenge popular beliefs that are not sustained by solid concrete proofs 20/ Meet someone that will always tell you the truth about yourself, the good and the bad 21/ Choose your battles: do not attempt to save the world, attempt to save one thing you really care about first 22/ Be deep with your close ones, open yourself up 23/ Jump on all opportunities to speak publicly 24/ Put yourself in other people’s shoes every time you do something with someone else involved 25/ Carry on competitive sports at amateur level. It helps keeping a winning mindset 26/ Stop constantly challenging your state of life; most likely you’ll lose more than you’ll gain 27/ Trust > History > Fun in your personal relationships. In this order, both all 3 are linked
Sounds easy right? Spoiler: I haven't accomplished most of these things anyway, but at least now I have a plan. A famous boxer once said: "Everyone has a plan until they get punched in the mouth". Go get punched 👊
