Highlights
How do users gets infected with infostealer malware? Well it's pretty interesting because there's actually a very easy way to tell.
And no it's not through tracking complex threat actor campaigns with funny names.
Before we dive in, let me explain infostealers. Infostealers are a type of remote access trojan that infect computers and steal session cookies, stored credentials in the browser, browser history, crypto wallet data, and in some they even take a screenshot of the computer.
As they say, a picture is worth a thousand words. So how do users get infected with this malware?
I've reviewed hundreds of infection screenshots at this point, and the answer appears to be huge amounts of cracked software, with maybe a plurality being specifically around game-repacking software. Game repacking involves modifying a game’s installation files to reduce its size or to bundle it with additional features or updates. Repackers may remove unnecessary files, compress assets, or adjust the installation process to make the game more accessible or faster to download.
It's both amusing and slightly terrifying to consider that the trend driving a huge % of data breaches and ransomware attacks in 2024 is.... users downloading repacked games and infecting themselves with infostealers with corp credentials saved on their browser.
Below is an actual victim screenshot, redacted to protect the users privacy. The number of infections we see with Youtube in the background is astoundingly high.
