Coach's Notebook #1: It's Normal, Understandable, and Forgivable
This morning I was coaching a high-level executive client who is going through a career transition -- that is, he is in between jobs and searching for the next career phase. And he has been at it for more than a minute -- and doing all the right things, as well: Time blocking activity on LinkedIn (e.g., enough time on LinkedIn to 'get it done' without staying on LinkedIn to the point it gets depressing and counterproductive), ongoing skills development, and a healthy dose of networking. Exhibit A: He's doing all the right things, he's doing a lot of it, and he's doing it in the right way.
Trouble is, it's been months and months of this and the next job offer has not yet arrived. After a while, all that hard work and no payoff often gets difficult for the job hunter. The mind starts playing tricks, the negative self-talk ramps up, the doubts about skills and market viability get more and louder and more pronounced.
The solution, perhaps, for some, can be found in non-judgmental acknowledgement. Job hunting sucks -- that's a fact, and it's neither good nor bad. It just is. And, a second truth, is that the hunt takes a lot of calendar time, every time, more than anyone wishes it would take. Again, true, and neither good nor bad, it just is.
And so -- when something sucks, and it sucks for a long time, naturally the discouragement and self doubt is going to follow. The trick is stepping away from self-judgment, making peace with the cold hard fact that this takes time, and allowing that the resulting emotional toll is normal, understandable, and forgivable.
My point is, when in a situation like this, my career transitioning friends, there are undeniable hardships of the job hunt journey that can rip you up inside unless you make peace with it, relax into it, commend yourself for the work your doing instead of beating yourself up for not already having arrived at the destination.
This is all normal. The feelings are understandable. And, it's all forgivable. 🍔
P.S. I love AI, but this post is stream-of-consciousness organic, farm-to-table, and written from the heart without AI.

So, I just published Episode 39 of the coaching podcast I host for ICF South Florida Charter Chapter. Meet coach Milena Stojanovic! In the podcast, she dives into her personal experiences as a former avoider, procrastinator, and recovering perfectionist -- and coaching on those topics. Milena Stojanovic believes "that we can reinvent ourselves as many times as we desire," and frequently coaches people who are on that journey.
Listen to it! Found on Spotify (https://lnkd.in/dXSAcJZc), Apple (https://lnkd.in/dCX-jjYu) and where are great podcasts are distributed.
