Chief Information Officer & Chief AI Officer at U.S. Department of Homeland Security
Eric Hysen is a prominent technology leader who served as the Chief Information Officer (CIO) and the first-ever Chief Artificial Intelligence Officer (CAIO) at the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS). He held these roles from February 2021 and September 2023, respectively, until his departure in January 2025. As CAIO, Hysen promoted innovation and safety in DHS's use of AI, advised Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas on AI policy, and chaired the DHS Artificial Intelligence Task Force. His work included implementing responsible AI policies to ensure compliance with civil rights and privacy standards.123
