About a year ago, Freddy Chen reached out to Tae Hoon Lee and myself for my startup to work on their #NanyangEMBA Capstone project (Strategy Project at Nanyang or SPAN). I jumped right in. Was too good to miss.

Having six fresh minds dive into our business was amazing. They brought such unique perspectives, drawing from years of leadership experience. Genuinely challenged some of the business' core assumptions.

We were impressed by their hard work. In just a short time, they not only got the hang of enterprise #blockchain, but also came up with a #ZKP value proposition, and two entirely new use cases. Amazing what they achieved without any prior experience in the field.

Last Friday, I was lucky enough to attend their graduation dinner. The night got even better when they won the #best SPAN project! The late nights and weekend sprints truly paid off ;)

Shoutout too to Victor Tng for winning the Outstanding Peer Award. I first-hand saw how he brought the team together and coordinated super well with Tae Hoon and myself. Well deserved.

To the team, thank you for giving Tae Hoon Lee and I the opportunity to work together with you. We'll be cheering you on in your next phase of life. ;)

To Rachel Ooi, DSc, PCC - as much as you had been a mentor for the team, I see you as one for me too. Learnt a lot myself, and looking forward to any new collaboration down the road ;)

The Fractionals: Managing Expectations through Scoping

If you've ever participated in a project, you’ve likely faced the dreaded monster of all - Scope Creeeeeeep.

For those fortunate enough to have avoided this beast, a simple introduction here: Scope Creep is akin to its cousin, the Cookie Monster. Instead of cookies, it devours your project's time, cost, and resources uncontrollably.

Dealing with Scope Creep is inevitable and necessary. Yielding to a demanding client can cause your other clients to suffer and limit your ability to focus on business development and sales for your own fractional business.

In this episode, Shilpa S Nath and I share key learnings from our own experience and conversations with several fractional leaders:

  • Define a Clear Scope: Before starting any engagement, detail the scope as thoroughly as possible. This serves as a valuable reference point for everyone involved.

  • Timebox the Engagement: Implement a timeboxing strategy. For instance, Paddy Tan’s 100-day fractional GTM program provides both the fractional professional and the client with a clear deadline to either conclude or extend the engagement.

  • Utilize Productivity Tools: Tools like Forest and Toggl are excellent for tracking which projects you’re working on throughout the day.

Dealing with these items from the get go is a great way to build trust, setting the right expectations, minimizing any conflict.

What's your tip?
