As I share this news, I can't help but reflect on our transformative journey.
When I first joined Redwood over two decades ago, we were just a budding truckload brokerage. Our drive was unmistakably clear: Growth with our customers at heart. Listening to our clients and feeling the pulse of our own operations, we launched our very own TMS technology. As our customers' voices echoed a need for more advanced solutions, we expanded into transportation management and system implementations. But in true Redwood spirit, we faced adversity with innovation, culminating in the creation of RedwoodConnect – our enterprise integration platform as a service (iPaaS) tailor-made for logistics. The journey from there, marked by organic and acquisitive growth, expanding multimodal capabilities, growing geographical footprints, building open ecosystems, and digitizing top-tier supply chains, has been nothing short of transformative. Yet, at the heart of it all, our core values have remained steadfast.
Today, as I see Redwood align with what Gartner describes as a 4PL, the pride is overwhelming. We've become a beacon in logistics execution and cutting-edge supply chain tech. Data Standards: A Laughable Journey Through Non-Standard Standards
In a world where data is king, data standards are the knights in shining armor. They provide a trusty and dependable framework for exchanging and storing data, making it easier for different systems to play nice and work together.
But wait, what's this? Every time we try to create a standard, we end up with another non-standard? That's right, folks, welcome to the wild and wacky world of data standards - a place where irony reigns supreme.
You see, when it comes to creating data standards, each organization wants to call the shots. So, instead of working together to create a standard that works for everyone, we end up with a bunch of non-standard standards that don't work for anyone.
This leads to a fragmented data landscape where different systems are speaking different languages and trying to communicate through a game of charades. The result? Inefficiencies, errors, and immediate damage to supply chain resiliency.
But, don't lose hope just yet. The solution to this comical conundrum is simple - collaboration. We need to bring all relevant stakeholders to the table, from industry associations and government agencies to tech vendors and end-users. By working together, we can establish a common set of data standards that everyone can agree on.
Just kidding, that’s a pipe dream and unfortunately, we’ve known this for many years. (I’ll go into why this anti-pattern exists in a future post)
As supply chains go digital, the ability to transform data from one standard (or non-standard) into another in real-time is paramount. With RedwoodConnect, our customers and partners send data to us in their unique standard, and the platform handles data translation for them. The same is true in reverse, their partners send data in their native format, and the platform sends responses and updates in a way that requires little to no IT involvement.
