In 1997, over twenty years past the fall of Saigon, addressing the lingering scars of Vietnam was still taboo for advertisers. That summer at Y&R we were creating stories of human connections for our new AT&T client, and I wrote this one from experiences my cousin Mickey had while serving in ’67. We were thrilled to have Joe Pytka shoot it, and graced to have David Crosby grant us permission for “Long Time Gone” to be its score. Spending a day recording the track with he and Graham Nash is among the coolest things I’ve ever gotten to do. He and his wife Jan were warm and gracious, and in the most surreal twist, spent much of the session thanking us for creating this film. A few months later, when the fear of potential backlash had AT&T holding the spot’s release, Crosby sent a compelling letter to their CMO conveying in ways far more expressive and persuasive than we could, why it was important for this story to be shared. And like everything else, he made this happen. I love David Crosby and will always be grateful for the gifts he gave us.
