Big year on deck!
Last month I was fortunate enough to be able to represent R. P. Marzilli & Company, Inc. for the second year in a row at the National Collegiate Landscape Competition on the Mississippi State campus. It continues to be in my mind, the event of the year for our industry. An equal combination of meeting the next generation of talented leaders and getting to learn from peers from all over the country. Thank you to the National Association of Landscape Professionals for all of their hard work to make it possible.
A select few of countless highlights: -Getting to spend time with William Beerman and his group of dynamic studens from Williamson College of the Trades, maybe the most unique and impressive landscape programs in the country. (1st place in Arboriculture too!)
-Naomi Clark of Carteret Community College finishing 8th out of 529 participants. I had the opportunity to speak with her at length the day prior to competition day and we could only be so lucky to add her to our team as an edible vegetable specialist.
-Getting to connect with the next generation of Penn State students, several of whom will no doubt join the rich history of PSU alumni who help RP Marzilli be the best landscape contractor in the nation.
-A conversation I had with a gentleman who is now a Branch Manager for one of the most respected firms in the country. He explained that when he graduated high school and wanted to attend a respected University as a Horticulture major, his parents who are MDs were skeptical and cynical at best. “What are you going to do? Be a landscaper?” they said. He replied yes and has shown them what that can mean.
-While at a dinner, a professor and Director of his university’s Landscape program asked me point blank, “I have many talented women in my program, would your company be a welcoming place for them?” Imagine my pride when I could answer that I feel the strength of RP Marzilli is largely due to our diversity of thought amongst leadership and the prevalence of women throughout out company, especially in key positions. Co-Founder, CFO, 2 Operations Managers, Branch Manager, 63% of Account Managers, Horticulture Managers, and nearly our entire administrative team.
-Lastly, getting to spend time with my co-workers that I accompanied on the trip. The most impressive and talented group of landscape professionals I have ever had the pleasure of working with over the course of 16 years and it’s not even close. Seeing their passion for what we do was both inspiring and invigorating! We all have a “get to” job, not a “got to” job at Marzilli, and I can’t think of better representatives to the rest of the industry.
