She focuses on covering poverty and inequality in the Bay Area through the California Divide project, and is affiliated with organizations like the International Women's Media Foundation and Report for America.

Hellerstein's journalism career has taken her across various countries including Honduras, Mexico, Argentina, Chile, and Colombia, where she has reported on social issues and human rights.
