Their struggles are our struggles and it takes a massive amount of strength and resilience to press on with life when things are unraveling. It can also be horribly isolating to feel like you can’t talk to anyone about what’s really going on for fear of judgment or losing your connections due to “over sharing.”
How often do we ask “how are you?” and then wait for the “fine” or “ok, you?” so that we can move on from pleasantries? A lot of people are not fine and in fact they are struggling to get through every day, and they may see no way out. We need to make it ok for people to say things like: “actually, I feel awful right now and I’m barely holding it together.”
Please ask your family, friends, colleagues, and others how they are doing, and let them know that you really want to know. Listen. Offer help and mean it.
I am committing here and now to share more and to listen more.
