Founder at Plus One Robotics (We're hiring!)

Erik Nieves is the co-founder and CEO of Plus One Robotics, a company that develops 3D and AI-powered vision software for robots in warehouses and distribution centers.14 He founded the company in 2016 after a 25-year career at Yaskawa Motoman Robotics, where he served as Technology Director and was responsible for the technology roadmap.12

Nieves is a prominent figure in the robotics industry:

  1. He serves on the board of directors for the Robotics Industries Association (RIA).1
  2. He is a frequent speaker and contributor to public policy on robotics and the US Congressional Robotics Roadmap.1
  3. He is part of the Association for Advancing Automation (A3) robotics technology board.3

Prior to founding Plus One Robotics, Nieves played a key role in mapping robotics development in the Americas and was involved in various robotics initiatives, including work with NASA on remote human-in-the-loop control for satellite servicing.45

Under Nieves' leadership, Plus One Robotics has achieved significant milestones:

  • The company passed 1 billion lifetime picks across all robots fielded with Plus One technology in 2024.4
  • They successfully deployed robots at major logistics companies like FedEx and DHL.4
  • The company has expanded internationally, opening its first office in the Netherlands in 2021.4

Nieves is known for his belief that "people are better than robots at everything that matters" and promotes the idea that "#robotsworkpeoplerule".1 He currently resides in San Antonio, Texas, where Plus One Robotics is based.12

"We're not hitting rate."

That's what I said to our support team when we reviewed the dashboard for one of our customers.

“What’s the rate?” is always the first question we hear when talking to potential users and this client was no exception.

We had recently deployed a depalletizing robot for them that was engineered to hit their required rate of XXX picks per hour. The acceptance testing went swimmingly and the system was handed over to Operations.

But here we are a couple of months later and the dashboard showed that the robot was running consistently, but at a slower rate than we had left it.

We pinged the user expecting to hear grousing about lost throughout, but instead we heard nothing but praise for the robot. “It’s running great!”

???

The Ops lead at the warehouse then told us that they were feeding the robots all the pallets with the biggest and heaviest boxes. The warehouse associates didn’t want to break down those pallets by hand and opted to send them all to the robot - which never complained about them.

Of course the robot ran slower! Our vision software recognizes the size of the boxes and automatically slows the robot down when transferring the largest ones.

And then came my a-ha moment. We’ve been measuring warehouse performance all wrong. So much of the engineering and procurement process for the robot was centered on rate, rate, rate. But to the people running it every day, the value was elsewhere. The robot could handle the heavies.

So next time I hear the question “What’s the rate?”, my first question back will be “What’s the end game?” Meaning, zoom out. What are you trying to accomplish? What impact are you driving towards? Is it:

Drive more total volume through the warehouse Reduce employee turnover  Deliver consistent volumes Reduce workplace injuries and claims

These are all valid outcomes to drive towards, but reducing any of them to a simple pph rate won't always correlate in the big picture. The problem with our current manual warehouse metrics is that the scope of measurement is too narrow.

Instead, let's think harder about outcome-driven metrics that deliver bigger picture impact for the new tech-enabled warehouse.
