I loved Peter's simple framing for what it means to feel valued at work.

There are few, if any, people more equipped to explore the issues surrounding the workplace than him.

I've learned so much from sitting down with @Wharton faculty as part of this @WhartonKnows series.

Before I became a dean, I was a professor of organizational behavior. In my field, there is something called “threat-rigidity,” a phenomenon I revisited in welcoming The Wharton School Undergraduate Class of 2028 to campus earlier this week.

This concept references research that found that when we experience a threat, our immediate reaction is to not only flee (think “fight or flight”) but also to retreat into ourselves.

When we retreat, we often become rigid and inflexible, and at the extreme, unwelcoming to people and ideas that are different from our own. In this way, our worldview becomes small, our ideas narrow, and our decision-making falters.

This is precisely the type of instinct I urged our incoming Wharton students to avoid, especially given the sense of division and difference in our world today.

Successful leaders use their education and experiences to EXPAND their worldview. They listen to new ideas. They engage across differences and welcome new perspectives - even if they challenge their own.

As our academic year gets underway, I encourage our community to embrace flexibility of thought as a mechanism for advancing our society, together. #TheWhartonWay
