"Words are arbitrary."

The memory came to me instantly as I lifted the flaps of the cardboard box my neighbor left on our front porch.

Gasping audibly, I snatched up the yellow-covered stamp kit sitting on top of the hand-me-down books inside. I couldn't believe this relic of my childhood was back in my hands.

It was sixth grade English and we were learning about Egyptian hieroglyphics.

As I pecked my way through the "Fun with Hieroglyphs" collection trying to approximate my own language through pictures I had so many questions.

Why didn't they use letters? How could a bird symbol mean a sound, OR a combination of sounds, OR not at all a sound, but a whole idea?!

Wasn't that confusing?

"The meaning of the symbols was decided and agreed upon," my teacher shared. "Just like in our language. Letters and words are arbitrary. We all have to agree to what they mean or they wouldn't communicate anything at all."

My mind was blown away. 🤯

I read voraciously, but had never thought deeply about words.

I loved talking ("incessantly" according to many early report cards), but had never thought about communication as an agreement.

Fast forward a few decades and now I think about it every day.

It's fun to think that maybe my appreciation for the power of communication started there in Mrs. Shepherd's class.

It's safe to say I'll keep unpacking the nuance of meaning-making for the rest of my life.

"You had me at hello," is the dream for service providers, but...

...it doesn't just happen.

I hear, "I want clients who understand the value of my service and have the money to pay for it."

Right. Of course. Because what you do is valuable and has changed businesses and lives before. You're excellent at your craft.

And it sounds terrible to have to CONVINCE someone of that on a sales call. Bleh.

To avoid that sales call scenario, consider what happens ✨before hello.✨

Future clients want to know:

-You get where they're coming from. -You've solved their problem before. -Your price and approach align with their perceived value. -They will like working with you. -You will remove the thorn from their business paw -They can trust you with their business.

That is a lot to communicate before ever getting on an intro call with you.

The real dream is that the sales call ❗confirms❗ what they already think:

That you are the perfect solution provider for them.

If you want to have them at 'Hello,' think about what they need to know before they ever get on a sales call with you.
