We need to be willing to take risks at some point in our life. Without that willingness, hardly anything interesting is likely to happen to you.

It is always better to be overly confident than pessimistic.

Be pessimistic, if you are not looking for chances, you will miss opportunities, you see too many dangers that are not there, that you end up not doing anything eventually.

You need to have a winner’s edge, that confidence, that absolute belief that you are the best, and you can win.

Yet sometimes it does not come right away at the beginning, and it often takes some time before you realise that, and your skills and confidence start coming together.

It also comes to a point where you realise you that if you are going to be the best at some point, you need to show that. You need to start becoming more confident and take a different approach.

That’s when you first have confidence. Once you have the skills, your confidence then serves your skill, and your skill serves your confidence. That’s when your playing strength catches up to your optimism.

There are two types of confidence: phony and expert.

Phony confidence, borne of ignorance, fools us into thinking we understand something when we don’t. As a result, we take risks we don’t know we’re taking. If we take risks, we need a larger margin of safety.

Expert confidence, borne of deep fluency, allows us to understand the risks we are taking. When taking risks, we might not require as large a margin of safety.

If you know your confidence is expert confidence instead of phony confidence, you well understand the risks that you are taking, and it allows you to take risks and the giant leap of faith and confidence to move forward, and go for it.

PS: A personal reflection as I was learning this article from FS: The Winner’s Edge, when I started publishing my book and sharing on Twitter/X, and soon to be starting my own investment fund.
