I’m asking you to donate to an org led by people I’ve known for almost 3 decades. I’m personally donating $1001 because I have 1001 reasons for all the ways they have impacted and enriched my life.
I met Kyung-ji Kate Rhee (KJ) on our first day of college - our dorm rooms were next to each other. We bonded over being Korean and the fact that neither of us liked our assigned roommates very much. She thought I was aloof, 2 cool for school and didn’t know then I was shy and desperately trying to be somebody else. We’ve been BFFs ever since. I first met Chino Hardin in my early 20s. KJ met Chino in the 90s, recognized his natural leadership skills and invited him to join her org. Chino is Black, Indigenous, and Trans, grew up in Bed Stuy, a former gang leader, and sent to Rikers countless times. Today - they are Co-Executive Directors of Center For NuLeadership on Human Justice and Healing in Bed Stuy, NY. Both of them are featured in books and films you may have heard of — Ava DuVernay’s Oscar-winning doc, "13th", Johann Hari’s book, “Chasing the Scream: The First and Last Days of the War on Drugs.”
They’re doing the kind of work that never gets mainstream recognition - genius grants, slick capital campaigns, or MacKenzie Scott money (not yet). The philanthropy industrial complex deems them too risky/too straight outa Rikers to give real money. Their work is unique because it is led by, powered by, and adaptive to the lived experience realities of the people most directly impacted by the prison industrial system. And they don’t fit neatly into a box to make things easy for funders — actual lived experience realities are intersectional, messy and never fit into boxes. They are a policy, advocacy, direct service, youth organizing, job and skills training, community policing, ecosystem building org. Above all, they are innovators - locally right now by being hyper-responsive to the real world needs of the Bed Stuy cmty; experimenting, prototyping, testing, iterating, pivoting and adapting constantly with no money. We need them to scale. To spread their tested, validated models & practices more broadly. We need Angels, funders, donors, all of us. Are you in?
KJ has no idea I’m making this ask. There’s no dedicated capital campaign staff or brand strategy consultants. She’s too busy doing the actual hard work, hustle and grind - writing grants, crunching numbers for the audit, headed to the precinct after a 2am phonecall from a youth who just got picked up by the police, mentoring, developing, and refusing to give up on the future Chino Hardins of the world - all while raising her 7 yr old daughter Ijeoma, which means “the journey" in Igbo. She’s my hero.
