Happy Birthday Switzerland, and Happy Birthday EU AI Act!   Today is Swiss National Day, and today the EU AI Act enters into force!

Although Switzerland is not a member of the EU, the EU AI Act will also have an impact on Swiss companies that interact with the EU market. This is because the EU AI Act applies to all AI systems that impact the people in the EU - and to all companies across the value chain, whether developers, deployers, importers or distributors of AI systems. Which means that Swiss companies that make available AI systems in the EU or provide services to EU customers must ensure that their products comply with the new regulations.

And the countdown down for implementation started ticking. While the EU AI Act as a whole is generally applicable only on 2 August 2026, a number of provisions have different implementation deadlines, reflecting the risk-based categorization of AI systems as detailed in our Connect on Tech article.

Complying with the EU AI Act will require a great deal of preparation, particularly for companies that are developing higher risk AI systems and general-purpose AI systems.

Are you ready?

PS: The image - which was meant to picture the Swiss National Day and the entry into force of the EU AI Act - was created by AI.

PSS: The Connect on Tech article which my Baker McKenzie colleagues Ben Allgrove, Vinod (Vin) Bange, Karen Battersby, Helen Davenport, Elisabeth Dehareng, Cristina Duch, Lukas Feiler, Francesca Gaudino, Kathy Harford, Megan Alice McGleenon, Sue McLean, Jose Maria Mendez Zori, Michael Schmidl, Florian Tannen and I drafted is available here:
