Éva Tardos is a prominent Hungarian-American computer scientist and mathematician currently serving as the Jacob Gould Schurman Professor of Computer Science at Cornell University.23 She is a leading figure in theoretical computer science, particularly known for her work in algorithms, algorithmic game theory, and network optimization.12

Born on October 1, 1957, in Budapest, Hungary6, Tardos received her Dipl.Math in 1981 and her Ph.D. in 1984 from Eötvös Loránd University under the supervision of András Frank.23 She joined Cornell University in 1989 and has held various leadership positions, including Chair of the Department of Computer Science from 2006-2010 and again currently.34

Tardos's research focuses on:

  1. Algorithms and algorithmic game theory
  2. Network-flow algorithms
  3. Approximation algorithms
  4. Quantifying the efficiency of selfish routing
  5. Designing systems and algorithms for selfish users237

Her contributions have earned her numerous prestigious awards and honors, including:

  • Election to the National Academy of Engineering, National Academy of Sciences, and American Academy of Arts and Sciences3
  • IEEE John von Neumann Medal
  • Fulkerson Prize
  • Gödel Prize
  • Dantzig Prize
  • Van Wijngaarden Award45

Tardos has also served in editorial roles for several important journals in her field, including as Editor-in-Chief of the SIAM Journal of Computing (2004-2009) and the Journal of the ACM.34 In 2022, she was named the ACM Athena Lecturer for her fundamental research contributions and dedicated mentoring and service to the computer science community.58
