Highlights
This article summarizes what I had to learn the hard way early in my career. The most valuable work of building software is defining and understanding the problem, before jumping into formal requirements. This work also time-consuming, challenging to show progress on to leaders, and likely to get delegated to the more junior people under time pressure.
"Finding out what’s gone wrong with an unreliable inventory system might be a substantial project, using several sorts of expertise that requirements analysts lack. It might buggy software, or software misconfiguration, or a networking problem, or the software does not get used as intended because users misunderstand it, or it was never intended to do some things it’s now being used for—although it can be mostly made to work that way. Locating the trouble is not part of requirements analyst’s job, and they don’t have the training for it."
