Highlights
I just had 27 meetings with startup founders in the last 24 hours at a conference in Toronto. 😅
Here was the advice I gave them, mostly to the first-time founders. The serial entrepreneurs have already figured this out.
Stop doing:
- Investing in SEO.
- Thinking social media will grow your business.
- Hiring marketing internally.
Use this messaging framework instead:
- Use StoryBrand to make it simple for people to understand what you do.
- Craft your unique selling proposition (3 uniques).
- Start positioning yourself as a leading market solution (metrics, case studies, testimonials, reviews, awards).
Start doing these tactics until you get product-market fit:
- Cold email.
- Cold calling.
- Cold LinkedIn messaging.
Once you have product/market fit:
- Update your website with great copywriting & design.
- Invest in account-based advertising.
- Set up email nurture sequences.
Focus on solving one important problem for one customer persona. Don't do everything for everybody. Get really good at solving complex problems for people with money who are willing to spend it on a pain point that matters to them. You can test this thesis with outbound. You could also test it with advertising, but it will cost you more.
What I wish I knew 5 years ago.
- Focus on a USP: Niche down to stand out.
- One Market, One Product: Simplify to scale.
- Build Systems Early: Efficiency drives growth.
- Master Sales Skills: Great salespeople build great businesses.
- Productize Services: Streamline processes for easy scaling.
- Consider Equity Partnerships: Invest time and expertise for mutual growth.
