A great thread by Dare Obasanjo on why in office still matters.

On the internet, everything is transactional and discrete.

In person, it's fluid: you have 2-10 min chats often, act fast, and compound those observations + decisions over months to build trust and progress.

"I’ve been noodling on the research that shows people who’ve only worked remotely at a company underperform those who started in the office before WFH or work from the office.

There are two likely culprits and I suspect it’s both instead of one or the other.

First likely culprit for remote worker underperformance

  1. Onboarding requires ramping up from your coworkers which is often multiple quick conversations over weeks to months. Chat isn’t good for deep conversations and Zoom calls too time consuming & formal.

Other likely culprit for remote worker underperformance

  1. Being in an office helps build relationships with people in small ways that create trust. Remote leads to interactions being transactional and even confrontational versus collaborative without that baseline trust.

To get rid of the remote worker penalty I’d recommend the following

  1. Remote workers should be hybrid for first few months at the company or even team.

  2. Encourage regular team meetups in the office that span multiple days per month/quarter or favor hybrid over remote."
