Take the time; enough to have an extensive understanding of each of our values, how we approach problems, where we look for solutions, and how to help each other exhibit some restraint when needed (it happens) 😉

Last week‘s post illustrated the diverse creativity of 3 designers tasked with redesigning the same room (link in comments). The results were astonishingly different, demonstrating a wide breadth of imagination, vision and style.
However, they all had one thing in common – they began with a story, setting the scene with a narrative describing their imagined client, how they would use the space, and a setting or surroundings. Without a story, none of these spaces would evolve as they did.
For me, design is storytelling. If there's no story, I'm not inspired. A recent project comes to mind, where within ten minutes of meeting the clients, I knew they were ideal clients.
You might be thinking, how is that possible?
Because, they conveyed all the evidence I needed, effortlessly and with crystal clarity. They showed me the space in question and described their specific challenges and concerns; they shared their exhaustive pursuit of ideas that resulted in more questions than answers during the long months of Covid; they expressed their shared appreciation for the existing space, tho recognized it needed a refresh beyond their obvious issues and TLC...
They were ALIGNED in every conceivable way: with each other, to their home and its inherent characteristics, with their commitment to sustainable solutions, and with their receptivity to what is possible. I was IN – confident our shared values would illuminate a path to their dreams.
Alignment is the first of four compatibility attributes I require to work with clients. Together they form the foundation that success is built on. Without them, the project is doomed to fall short or fail. It's as critical for us to align with our clients' intentions, expectations and values, as it is for them to be in step with each other.
That's why our design process starts here, with our values-based assessment. With it, we reveal our client's values and assess their compatibility with the project goals. We learn how their values inform which process to use, our design approach and who else to invite to the team.
For these clients, we sought and delivered solutions that resonated; inclusively and with much discernment. They enthusiastically participated where the impact mattered most and were receptive to novel ideas beyond their periphery, resulting in a transformation that could not have been conceived otherwise.
