Evelyn Nussenbaum

Evelyn Nussenbaum is a journalist and advocate for children with epilepsy.1 She is an alumna of Pomona College, graduating in 1984 with a special concentration in English literature and film.12 Nussenbaum is married to Fred Vogelstein, who is also a journalist and a fellow alumnus of Pomona College.1 She is a board member at Cityside Journalism.3

After graduating, Nussenbaum worked in the film industry for eight years before transitioning to journalism.12 She worked as a producer for CNN and then wrote and edited for The New York Times, Fortune, Wired, and the New York Post.12

Nussenbaum's son, Sam, developed epilepsy, which led her to dedicate herself to finding a treatment for his condition.12 In 2012, she discovered a promising medicine in development at a U.K. pharmaceutical company.12 She contacted executives at GW Pharma, who eventually offered Sam a one-patient trial in London.12 The treatment proved successful.1 However, because the medicine was derived from cannabis, it was illegal in the U.S. at the time.12 Nussenbaum persevered, and in 2013, Sam was able to receive the medication through the FDA's compassionate use program.12 Nussenbaum continued her advocacy until the medicine, Epidiolex, received FDA approval in 2018 and became available in nearly 40 states and 36 countries.12
